Is Your Child Getting Enough Sleep?

The recommended amount of sleep for K-5, is 10-11 hours per night.
-If your child is always sleepy or overtired during the day, he or she might not be getting enough quality sleep.
-Children who drink caffeinated beverages sleep less than those who don’t.
-Shorter sleep time is associated with more screen time.
-A remarkable number of children have some kind of sleep problem.  Talk to your child’s doctor about his/her sleep habits!

Family Corner: Growing Seeds as a Family

Spring is here! We are excited for longer days in the sunshine and warmer weather. One of our favorite activities is watching things grow. At UHE, we sent home a packet of seeds with every child!  We hope this month, you can take time as a family to plant seeds and watch them come to life. This is a great time to teach your child about responsibility and science at the same time!

There are some great life lessons that can be learned from planting and nurturing seeds such as:

*Responsibility - You must follow the instructions given on how to best plant and nurture the seeds.

*Patience - In our fast paced lives, we are used to instant gratification.  Waiting for the seed to mature helps develop patience.

*Practice Reading and Following Directions - The directions to care for your seeds are located on the back of the package. With your child, you can read how to best plant and care for the seeds. Let them give reading the instructions a try!

*We can’t control everything, and that’s OK! - You can care for the seeds and still not get what you had planned.  Sometimes it doesn’t work out, and that’s OK!

Our school climate committee organized a student scavenger hunt that landed them at a pot of gold and they brought UHE staff a lucky snack. We are pretty lucky to be a part of Nettleton Schools!

Read Across America & Nurturing a Love for Reading!

Read Across America week is March 1-5!  It’s an opportunity to share with our students the joy of reading!  It’s always on or around Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2nd!  We know that this is a busy season, but we hope this month you can make intentional time to read as a family. Take turns choosing which book you read as a family. You can make it even more fun by creating a cozy corner in your home, made with your favorite blankets and pillows! Make it your child’s reading place. Give it a fun name. Let’s start now, nurturing a love for reading!

Kicking Off Great Kindness Challenge Week!

The last week of January is usually reserved to observe kind acts for our students! Each year we take time to focus on the importance of kindness for our peers as well as those in our community. Our students are starting the week off the right way, from technology time focusing on kindness to writing cards for our local nursing home patients. We can't wait to see what the rest of the week holds! Follow our UHE Facebook page to keep up with the latest Kindness Week updates!
